When: 05.29.10
Where: Athica
Time: 8:00 p.m.
Price: $6.00 – $9.00 Suggested donation with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the Altamaha Riverkeeper non-profit organization.

For the closing weekend of ATHICA’s Deluge exhibit we will present an evening of experimental song and sound exploring the confluence of water’s resonances--rite, scourge, cleansing, reflection--as they affect us in an overwhelming passage through our lives as floods, storms and even tears and rain. Water’s movement is timeless metaphor; floods, deluge, or release are as often emotional as they are liquid.

In a conceptual tour-de-force the three groups will perform continuously, cycling through a piece by one, then one by another, then another by the next, rather than breaking the flow of the music.

The performers are as follows:
Athens’ Box Devils is a two-piece unit creating 21st century torch, whose haunting mix of guitarwork, beautifully wide-ranging vocals, and electronic textured ambiance (real time, no computers) evoke yearning and loss.  Percussionist and maven of Athens experimental music scene Leslie Grove will join the Box Devils in some pieces. For more information and samples of the Box Devils’ recordings:http://www.reverbnation.com/boxdevils

Bike Rack Art Dedication

Don't think of them as bike racks, but rather sculptures with the functional purpose of securing your bicycle. The Classic Center Cultural Foundation has a history of dedication and commitment to the arts in our community and we are also committed to leading the way in making The Classic Center a greener place. We are elevating the profile of cycling to events at The Classic Center by installing bike racks at The Classic Center. But not just any bike racks, but artistic bike racks. Join us for refreshments downtown at The Classic Center as we celebrate the newest addition to public art in Athens. We will cut the ribbons on Joshua Jordan's artistic bike rack located on Thomas Street and Michael Ely's on Foundry Street.

The UGA Department of Theatre and Film Studies will present Eurydice in the Cellar Theatre from November 5–6 and 10–13 at 8 pm, with two matinées on November 8 and 15. Sarah Ruhl is a Pulitzer prize nominee as well as the recipient of the MacArthur Foundation’s 2006 Genius Award. The Foundation called her work “fresh, compelling, and versatile,” citing her original voice in Eurydice as a modern way of “capturing the pain of loss.” In 1997, Ruhl’s father died after battling bone cancer, and through the writing of Eurydice, she explores the meaning of grief and how we remember and long for those we have lost.

ATHICA Emerges III: Journeys

ATHICA Emerges III introduces Athens to exciting new work by three young local artists, and one artist team. Curator Mary C. Wilson and assistant curator Erin McIntosh selected the work from over two-dozen entries.

Excitingly, this year's exhibit veers away from the painting and sculptural works of the first two years of ATHICA's annual local emerging artists showcase, with new media, photo-based works and conceptual practices predominating. The four projects include two that explore personal journeys, both physical and virtual, and two that use inventive ways of recording and representing personal experiences.

Featuring: Jennifer Desormeaux, Layet Johnson & Charles Westfall, Robert August Peterson*, Robyn Waserman.

*Mr. Peterson's work will be sited at a new ATHICA satellite space at the Bottleworks complex at 286 Prince Avenue for which special hours are: Monday-Friday, 6-9:30 p.m., Saturday 5-8:30 p.m., Sunday 1-5 p.m., and by appointment.

ATHICA Gallery hours: Thursday 6-9 p.m., Friday-Sunday 1-6 p.m., and by appointment.

ATHICA - Crafting Romance

Curated By Rebecca Ray Brantley & Nathanael Roesch & assistant curator Amy Chicola
April 10 - May 31, 2009 At ATHICA

Taking on the age-old theme of love, Crafting Romance focuses on expressions of love, especially on their association with domestic and decorative arts--realms traditionally thought of as separate and lesser enterprises than the fine arts--despite the legacy of over 30 years of feminist art practice. While this colorful collection of international and national works was produced in a wide variety of media--jewelry, video, drawing, installation, photography, sculpture, sticker-art and more--it is bound together by its wit and relationship to craft.

*As a few works deal with adult subject matter, those planning to attend with minors may wish to preview the exhibit.

8th Annual FLUKE Mini-Comics Festival

FLUKE is a mini-comic festival that has been organized by Athens-area comic artists, underground publishers and their enthusiasts since 2002. Conceived as a venue for the discussion and exchange of timely ideas related to mini-comics, zines, and other independent publications, FLUKE is not a large comic convention or merchandising-saturated extravaganza. This isn't to say we don't like our share of stuff--'cause we do. However, we have kept the organization of the event as simple as possible to ensure that it remains focused on work and ideas rather than merchandising.
